There is an IP-filter updater available for uTorrent. This tool will however not update the IP-filter automatically. This is why I created an easy installation tool for this IP-Filter updater!

I created an easy installation tool which will install this filter updater in the correct place and then creates a scheduled Windows task to update each 8 hours. It will not be needed anymore to do everything yourself. You can install this IP-Filter Updater task in 2 ways:

- download the IP-block-updater.zip file, unzip it and run the ip-update-installer.bat

- download the IP-Block-Updater.exe and run it; this is a self-extracting file which will run the IP-update-installer.bat

The code for the IP-Update-installer.bat is as follows:

copy updater.bat %appdata%\utorrent
copy startscript.vbs %appdata%\utorrent
copy wget.exe %systemroot%\system32
copy unrar.exe %systemroot%\system32
schtasks /create /TN "IP_Blocker_Updater" /tr "wscript.exe %appdata%\utorrent\startscript.vbs %appdata%\uTorrent\updater.bat" /sc hourly /F /mo 8

As you can see, it will copy the updater and the startscripts to the utorrent folder. And because the updater needs the unrar and wget commands, it is the easiest to copy these to the system32 folder.

I have slightly changed his code, so the update will now force the unrar during the process.

Bij de installatie, vink alle componenten (behalve “download updates immediately”) uit en vink ook de permanente protectie uit: “SDHelper” en “TeaTimer”:

Zorg dat je dit programma eerst de definities bijwerkt (update). Voer vervolgens een controle uit om uiteindelijk alle problemen te repareren.

Om bedreigingen in de toekomst te vermeiden, immuniseer je systeem met het knopje “immuniseer”. Na de scan, klik dan ook op het plusje “Immuniseer”. Herstart je computer na deze operaties.

2. Microsoft Security Essentials

Let op. Dit stukje geldt alleen als je nog geen virus scanner hebt! Zorg dat je nooit meer dan 1 virus scanner tegelijk op je computer hebt staan. Heb je momenteel wel een virus scanner geïnstalleerd, maar hij werkt niet meer of je wilt er niet meer voor betalen, verwijder hem dan op de juiste manier (zoals bij puntje 4 beschreven wordt). Microsoft biedt voor alle Windows gebruikers gratis beveiligingssoftware aan. Deze werkt natuurlijk alleen maar als je een legale Windows installatie gebruikt. Ga naar deze hun website van Microsoft Security Essentials en download de software voor jouw besturingssysteem: www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Installeer Microsoft Security Essentials, voer daarna een uitgebreide scan uit en laat alle problematische gevallen verwijderen. Herstart je computer na deze operaties.

3. Windows Updates

Zorg dat je alle Windows updates laat downloaden en installeren. Neem hier je tijd voor! Het besturingssysteem kan fouten bevatten die je zelf niet door hebt, maar deze fouten zouden gebruikt kunnen worden door kwaadwillende. Dit kan zijn in de vorm van spam versturen, je wachtwoord te stelen, of andere kwetsbare zaken die je liever niet wilt. Deze ‘fouten’ worden meestal door Windows updates verholpen. Herstart je computer hierna.

4. Niet-gebruikte programma’s verwijderen

Ga eens door de lijst van programma’s. Alles wat je al een tijdje niet meer gebruikt hebt, verwijder dit dan. Er zijn genoeg redenen om programma’s van je computer te verwijderen: lange opstarttijd, rare pop-ups, langzame PC, ongewenste software, een langzame internetverbinding, vervelende en niet gebruikte Toolbars! Je komt op de lijst van programma’s op de volgende manier:

• Veilig software verwijderen van Windows 7 of Vista systemen: Ga naar Start -> Configuratiescherm -> Programma's -> Een programma verwijderen.
• Veilig software verwijderen van Windows XP systemen: Ga naar Start -> Configuratiescherm -> Software.
• Zoek het programma in de lijst en klik op de knop “Verwijderen”.

5. Gebruik MSCONFIG voor lastig te verwijderen software Pas hier wel mee op...

Het is goed mogelijk dat er programma’s op je computer staan waarvan je het bestaan niet af wist, wellicht weet je ook niet welke programma’s automatisch worden opgestart. Via het standaard-Windows programma “MSConfig”, is het mogelijk om te zien welke opstartprogramma’s er draaien. Start de Windows-tool via Start > Uitvoeren > Type “MSCONFIG” > ga naar het tabblad “Opstarten”. Let echter goed op wat je hierin doet!!!

Programma's/processen die regelmatig controleren of er updates zijn, zijn meestal overbodig. Software waarvan je weinig of geen gebruik maakt, kunnen uitgeschakeld worden. Ook processen die specifieke programma's (zoals Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office en/of Windows Live Messenger) 'sneller laten starten', kunnen uitgeschakeld worden om de opstarttijd van je computer te verbeteren. Wanneer het systeem functionaliteit lijkt te missen, kunnen deze gewoon weer ingeschakeld worden of desnoods zelf opgestart worden.

Hieronder vindt je een afbeelding van een lijst van opstartprogramma’s/processen, maar natuurlijk is deze lijst verschillend per computer. Zoals je kan zien zijn een groot aantal processen gewoon uitgeschakeld zoals Google Update, iTunes (Het werkt perfect zonder opstartproces), Microsoft OneNote, Java Updater en Dell gedoe (het werkt net zo goed met de standaard Windows Software).

Normaal gezien zou je computer na deze puntjes toch al een stuk sneller moeten zijn. De last van virussen en/of reclame zou nu ook opgelost moeten zijn.

These are the steps to take to manually create the update task:

1. Create a new folder under C:\ > Give it the name “Tasks”
2. Open Notepad: ctrl+r > type “Notepad” > Enter
3. Copy and paste the following visual basic script code into notepad:
   Function RunWindowedCMD(a_cmd)

4. Save this file as “MSE_start.vbs” > put this saved file under the folder C:\Tasks\
5. Open Notepad: ctrl+r > type “Notepad” > Enter
6. Copy and paste the following code into notepad:
   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\MpCmdRun.exe" -signatureUpdate
   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\Antimalware\MpCmdRun.exe" -signatureUpdate
   
7. Save this file as “MSSecurityEssentialsUpdate.bat” > put this saved file under the folder C:\Tasks\
8. Now you can create the task for hourly virus definition update, this can be done as follows:
   CTRL + R > copy and paste the following code into the text box:
   schtasks /Create /TN "MSE_Update" /TR "C:\Tasks\MSE_start.vbs" /SC hourly

You can also use the automated scheduled task install bat. Just download this zip file, extract it all and run the file INSTALL_MSSE_TASK.bat.

The code at step 6 is because there are two different versions of MSSE. The first code will run with Microsoft Security Essentials 1. The second code will run if you have installed Microsoft Security Essentials Beta 2.

I personally use the free Microsoft Security Essentials on my computer. It’s lightweight and working great! You can start the test by following the following steps:

1. Start notepad: ctrl+r > type “notepad” > enter
2. Copy and paste the following text into the notepad application:
   
   X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
3. Save this text file, it doesn’t matter what name. For example test.txt
4. When you get a virus warning, then your anti-virus software works fine. If you don’t get a virus warning, search for better software, for example the free Microsoft Security Essentials or the free AVG.
